Visa Process Issues
Currently, Turkish nationals undergo a challenging visa process to access Schengen countries, including Slovakia. For starters, the application system is time-consuming, often requiring extensive documentation.
Additionally, Turkish applicants have experienced higher rejection rates, specifically reaching 19.02 percent in 2021. As such, this has deterred many potential tourists. However, Slovakia maintains a higher approval rate of 88.8 percent, which indicates its willingness to welcome Turkish travelers.
While visa application is mandatory for Turkish travelers to Slovakia, they remain exempt from the ETIAS.
Simpler Visa Rules for Slovakia
Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bola recently emphasized the potential benefits of simplifying visa procedures for Turkish citizens. He communicated this belief during the Türkiye-Slovakia Round Table Meeting with Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Denisa Sakova.
Furthermore, tourism experts argue that relaxed visa requirements would make Slovakia a more accessible destination. Consequently, it would allow more Turkish travelers to explore the country’s rich heritage and natural beauty.
According to Bola, Turkey welcomes around 300,000 Slovaks annually, which is around five percent of the country’s population. On the flip side, Turkish travelers have a hard time visiting Slovakia because of its visa challenges.

Earlier, in December 2024, European Union Council President Ursula von der Leyen met with Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. After their meeting, von der Leyen emphasized how the EU strongly welcomes visa cooperation discussions.
Relaxing visa rules would boost Slovakia’s economy. For instance, the increase in tourism would boost revenue in Slovakia’s hospitality, dining, and retail sectors. Furthermore, local businesses catering to tourists would thrive, creating jobs and stimulating regional economies.
